Dylan Thomas Smith

Interview by Madeleine Ringer

At just 20-years-old, Dylan Thomas Smith has earned the title of BAFTA nominee for his role in ITV2’s G’WED. The show is Smith’s first major role and offers audiences a glimpse into his acting future, having already received praise after praise for his portrayal of Reece, a young Liverpudlian teenager in the series. Tackling issues like grief, sex, diversity, and class, G’WED does not shy away from life’s lessons, and within the taboos, Smith lights up the screen with an energetic ease.

G’WED has smashed the Scouse glass ceiling and offers audiences a show filled with new, young talent in a comedy drama which is both cheeky and sensitive. When did you realise the show was truly something special?

It was at the screening. I hadn't seen the full cut, so I was a little nervous, but within minutes the audience was so engrossed and were laughing at the right points. The response was incredible, then the positive reviews kept coming in, one in particular from Russel T Davies, which blew me away, because I'm a massive fan, and of course, the streaming views kept rising and rising.

In three words, how would you describe Reece this season?

Cheeky, loyal, unsure.

How have your friends and family reacted, watching you grow from a young boy auditioning to a 20-year-old in your breakthrough role with a BAFTA nominee?

My family and friends have been on the journey with me and know how many auditions I did before I got G'WED, so they are extremely proud of where I am now and I'm really grateful for their continued support. Like me, they are looking forward to what I do next.
